How Do I Use Shared SSL On Linux Hosting?

How to Use Shared SSL and AutoSSL in cPanel

cPanel provides several ways to secure your website using SSL. Older systems offered a shared SSL URL for temporary secure access, but modern cPanel now includes free AutoSSL for all hosting accounts, giving you a dedicated trusted SSL certificate at no cost.

Locate Your Shared SSL URL in cPanel

If you still require the shared SSL path for testing or legacy scripts, you can find it easily:

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Go to Security.
  3. Click SSL or TLS Status or SSL TLS depending on your cPanel theme.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see your shared SSL URL. It will look similar to:

https://server-name.website-ssl.com/~username/

You can use this format to securely load files by prefixing it in your scripts or links, for example:

https://server-name.website-ssl.com/~username/mysecurepage.php

Free Dedicated AutoSSL Now Included

Fast2Host now provides Free AutoSSL on all cPanel hosting accounts. This automatically issues a trusted SSL certificate for your domain using Sectigo or cPanel provided CA services.

AutoSSL:

  • Runs automatically every 24 hours.
  • Renews certificates before expiry.
  • Applies to all addon domains, subdomains, and primary domains.
  • Requires no manual installation in most cases.

To verify your certificate status:

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Go to SSL TLS Status.
  3. Look for the green padlock icon showing your domain is secured by AutoSSL.

If a domain does not validate automatically, click Run AutoSSL at the top of the page.

Which SSL Should I Use?

  • Shared SSL URL: Useful only for temporary access or when your domain has not propagated yet.
  • AutoSSL (Recommended): Secure, trusted, and automatically installed for your domain and subdomains.

For all modern websites, AutoSSL is the correct solution and requires no coding changes.
